FOOD PRICE CONTROL

DICTATOR FOR GERMANY,

TO ALLAY DISCONTENT

MAN WITH PAST RECORD,

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 6, 9.45 a.m. BERLIN, Nov. 5.

Alarmed at the popular discontent with rising food prices, the Government is seeking to centralise the control of the markets and has appointed Dr Goerdeler, ex-Mayor of Leipzig, as national commissioner for the supervision of food prices, with practically dictatorial powers. He is responsible directly to Herr Hitler. The late President Hindenburg appointed Dr Goerdeler in 1931 to a similar position, when he reduced prices by 10 per cent, within four months. The Government has taken control of the whole of the aye wheat harvest. Cattle breeders complaining of a serious shortage of fodder are forbidden the use of wheat and rye for this purpose.

TEST FOR NAZISM

POSSIBLE FOOD SHORTAGE.

IN COMING WINTER,

LONDON, Nov. 5. Tho Berlin correspondent of the Daily Express, referring to food hoarding and the measures being taken against profiteers, says: This will be Germany’s most fateful post-war winter. If the people can be fed on the slim stores available the Nazis may survive to cany out the ambitious resurrection of Germany. If not the sequel cannot be foretold. “There is a 15 per cent, shortage of food throughout the country, and practically'no foreign currency with which to import more. Every measure is being taken to ensure economy of foodstuffs and raw materials. Every invention is being used to make substitutes. Berlin’s buses are running on benzoline made in Germany, clothes are being made from synthetic wool, and luxuries have been forgotten.”
