HATING RELIEF.

POSITION OF BOROUGHS

In connection with the question of rating relief recently raised in the House of Representatives, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) yesterday conferred with the finance committee of the Feilding Borough Council on the matter, following which a telegram was sent to Hon. J. G. Cobbe, as under:

“While agreeing that the majority of farmers require relief in their rate burdens, we consider boroughs feel the burden of rates equally with county ratepayers, particularly business premises and sections in the business area, urban farm lands, large vacant sections, unemployed endeavouring to retain their homes, and any residences with large sections attached. If it is not possible to grant the 121 per cent, relief to boroughs, we suggest the Government seriously consider providing. say, 5 or 71 per cent, relief.” Air Taylor said his views in not asking for the full 121 per cent, relief to be accorded boroughs were that .lie realised the sum required would be about three times greater than that to provide the relief already decided upon. Ho thought it would be impossible to uo this, but at the same time in's opinion was that the boroughs should receive some consideration.
