PAHIATUA, Nov. 3.
The Paliiatua County Council met to-day, Cr. A. W. Bisset presiding. It was decided that the chairman, clerk and overseer meet the Highways Board on its visit of inspection on December 3 and that the following matters be brought before the board : Widening at entrance to Alakuri Gorge; additional sealing of No. 15 Main Highway; and sealing of the No. 84 Ai'aiu Highway (Paliiatua Station Road). The Main Highways Board advised the granting of subsidies. The consulting engineers, Alessrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt, were requested to carry out an engineering survey and prepare drawings of the balance of the No. 15 main highway with a view to calling tenders for additional sealing. Six tenders were received for the supply of dog collars and one at fid per collar was accepted. The matter of the purchase of another grader was left to the executive finance committee with power to act. The report of the overseer, which was adopted, stated, inter alia : —Wellington-Napier highway : 700 cubic yards of metal have been spread and all metal lias been graded in. Aletal is at present being dumped for maintenance work. Pahia-tua-Pongaroa: Surface patching has been carried out and grading has been completed. The pit at Tuscan Hills is being prepared for the transfer of the crusher to tin’s locality. Pahiatua-Railivay Station : Afetal has been graded in and river protection at the town bridge has been commenced. Makuri-Mangatoro: Watertabling has been carried out and 100 cubic yards of river shingle have been utilised for surface repairs. Tim visibility at a dangerous corner on Conway’s Hill lias been improved. Two lines of pipes have been laid. Paliia-tua-Mangaone : 160 cubic yards of shingle have been spread and three lines of .nine-inch pipes have been laid. An old culvert which was in a dangerous condition lias been replaced with a line of 36-inch pipes. Arrangements have been made with the Ivaitawa factory for the drainage of whey and the filling at the factory culvert can be proceeded with at an early date.
I'lie first fat lambs to be despatched to Waingawa from this district were sent yesterday from the farms of .Messrs J. T. Ross, C. H. Ross, C. Hopkins. E. Thomson, N. Sorensen and A. S. Clulow. A particularly fine truck load was dispatched by Air F. Bolton to Wellington last Wednesday.
