IN ENGLISH BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
GAINS BY LABOUR,
MR LANSBURY’S INFERENCE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received November 3, 11.65 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 2. In the municipal elections in England and Wales not all the results of polling have yet been declared, but the position this morning showed that Labour lias retained its majorities in town councils already under its control arid gained the majority in many others. A Press Association cable says the position of the gains and losses in London is as follows:
Gains Losses Municipal Reform ... 1 210 Labour 227 11 Independents 0 13 With returns incomplete the state of the parties is as follows: — Municipal Reform 362 Labour _ 448 Progressives 0 Independents H In the provinces the gains and losses are as follow:
Gains Losses Conservatives 38 355 Labour 443 44 Liberals 4 34 Independents 5 74 Mr G. Lansbury said the results prove that municipal Socialism is getting a firm hold of the people. “It is certain that the longer the Government remains in office the greater will be the smashing victory.” A feature of the London poll is the complete rout of Communist candidates. Further returns increase the Socialists’ sweeping victory in the elections. They now control ten London boroughs out of 28.
