TRAINER’S DEATH.
MU H. L. RUSSELL.
A popular figure in racing in Auckland has been removed by the death r of the trainer, Mr H. L. Russell. About 12 months ago Mr Russell became seriously ill, and after a long period m hospital was recuperating at Kawau Island. „ ~r t ~r~. i, The second son of Mr J. J. Hussoll, tof New Plymouth, he was associated with horses throughout his life. As a boy he rode liis father’s horse, IJhlan, fto victory in the A.R.C. Handicap at Ellerslie a few days after the same horse, ridden by R. Barlow, had won jfche Auckland Cup in the 1898-99 season. He later went in for training at Jfew Plymouth, Wanganui, and finally fTe Awamutu. Many good horses were prepared by him, notably Civility, Siaosi, Aspian, Limeen, Spalpiko and Jonathan.
