SPRING SHOW

| PUBLIC’S GRATIFYING SUPPORT

FURTHER AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Gratifying- public support for the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Spring Show since it opened has produced a total increase of £ll2 6s 6d m the gate returns for the first two days compared with the corresponding figures for last year’s Spring Show. The total reyenue received hem the gates is.now £613 Is Gd, compared with £SOO Ids. Yesterday’s takings showed an increase of £44 0 s ovei the second day for last year, the revenue from admissions being £342 15s, compared with £298 4s 3d. COMPARATIVE TABLE. JUDGES’ COMMENTS.

Comparative figures of gate takings for the past three years are as follow:

CATTLE SECTION JERSEYS.

G. Beautiful spring weather prevailed tegain yesterday afternoon, and stock Was judged under ideal conditions. A Igusty wind was of little consequence, »nd the public thoroughly enjoyed the day’s outing. FENCING DISPLAY. Pupils of the London School of LlArms, Wellington, under the direction of the principal, Miss Zena Clarke, provided an entertaining attraction in the stadium last evening, ibut the attendance could have been farger. Those who were present were fwell rewarded by the exhibition of fencing with both gentlemen and lady duellists, the. latter looking very 6mart in their neat black and white costumes. As was explained to the audience, the sword-play with the poinards of the gallant days of chivalry, when an Indiscreet utterance was the precursor to a challenge to a duel, has become an academic and scientific accomplishment with the foil of to-day, and also a very exacting one physically, and leading to grace and alertness in poise and carriage. Miss Clarke proved herself to he a tumble and dexterous exponent in demonstrating the etiquette of fencing, and the principles of the attack and parry. Ladies engaged each other with the foils, and two men pupils, in a sharp encounter, demonstrated the use of the sabre. Marked proficiency was shown by the duellists, the more advanced pupils giving a very finished exhibition. Subsequently the party appeared in a laughable farce wherein a gallant knight errant of chivalrous demeanour arrived in time to rescue two sweet and distressed damsels from the attentions of a heavily moustached villain. This, humorous presentation was greatly enjoyed.

EING EVENTS. JUDGES FAVOURABLY IM-

PRESSED

SOTJTHDOAVNS

Speaking in regard to the Jeisey cattle he had judged, Mr A G. Lovelock, of Matangi, said all the classes had been good with an absence of ‘Aail-enders.” There had not been much to pick and choose between them m regard to quality in either the young or the aged sections, the latter containing some very fine, mature show ring stock, while the former, included a wealth of promising material. iDetailing the merits of the champion animals in the bull classes, Mr Lovelock said the 2-year bull which had gained the award “had it all over the aged bull, which had been the runnerup. In general Jersey character, conformity to type, the champion was very strong, while in addition it was a nice bodied bull with a good top line. , . The reserve champion was also ot good merit, showing plenty of constitution and very good points. In the cow classes the judge classed the champion as an outstanding beast with particularly nice bones, a good body, and a splendid udder and mammary system. The reserve champion cow had been pleasing to Mr Lovelock, lier udder being one of her strong points. Mr Horn’s cow in the aged class had. also been of special merit and. the judge had had a hard job in arriving at his decision in regard to the reserve championship. Summarising his remarks, Mr Lovelock said there had not been a poor class in the whole section. HEREFORDS.

Mr J. M. James, of Masterton, judged both the polled and horned Herefords. He said he had noticed an improvement in the quality of the polled cattle. He himself was concentrating on the polled Herefords, for to him they appeared to offer all that was required by the market. In regard to the show exhibits Mr James said the champion and reserve champion bulls were polled beasts, and first class examples of the breed. He had given the verdict to the younger beast on condition, although little had separated the animals in regard to type. Both were the type required for breeding the cattle the chilled beef market demanded. In the yearling heifer class the awards had also gone to polled Herefords, the class containing some, nice young beasts. A choice collection of the breed had also come before him in the yearling bull class, and generally the breed had been well represented. Mr James urged breeders to obtain polled- sires for their herds, for the tendency was undoubtedly in the direction of the polled animal; hut at the same time he advised breeders to mate them with their best cows and not with culls about to bo discarded. FRIESIAN S. Quality was said to be very high in tlie Friesian classes by the judge, Mr H. E. Johnson, of, Hawera, particularly in the champions of both sexes. In the cows trueness of type was a feature and Mr Johnson was sure they would give the good results expected of the breed. ABERDEEN ANGUS. An improvement in the Aberdeen Angus classes compared with those at last year’s Show was commented on by the judge, Mr L. Cowan, of Dannevirke, the advance in general quality greatly pleasing him. An especially good specimen had come before him in the champion cow, Mr Cowan describing her as an animal which could lie shown to advantage anywhere. The bulls generally were a stronger class than the cows, the support given in this section showing the popularity of tlie breed. MILKING SHORTHORNS. Speaking of tlie Milking Shorthorns lie had judged, Mr E. A. Washer (Okoia) said lie had found pleasure in the standard of the entries, the quality being far better than that at previous Shows. Some exceptionally good animals had come forward and he congratulated tlie exhibitors on tlie' condition of the beasts. Air Washer thought, however, that tlie animals should be presented in the show ring with more attention to detail by the. exhibitors. The increased support accorded the Shorthorns bad gratified the judge, who added that the breed was gaining favour in Taranaki. In tlie Alanawatu, the judge was pleased to say, breeders could now obtain good sires, for the district was producing quality stock. SHORTHORNS. Describing the beef Shorthorns, Air AI. F. Donovan (AlaraekakaJio) the judge., said tlie exhibits gave a striking representation of what lie thought was the best breed of beef cattle in the world. He was sorry that there had not been more individual exhibitors, and drawing attention to the exhibits in classes 71 and 74 he said that the white colour of the beasts was the chief characteristic of the breed.

exhibits had satisfied him. He would have liked to have seen larger entries in liis section, and he considered that such a class should be one of the main attractions in the ewe stock division of the Show. Speaking in regard to the meat, Mr G. M. Moffitt (Feilding), classed only half the entries as being up to the standard lie liad expected in the way of good meat. Tlie placed pens contained some very good carcases, showing both type and quality, but some of the others did not carry the condition necessary to he considered from a meat point of view.

The judge of the Romney Alarsh natural condition rams, Mr J. Blair (Alaxwell) thought the competition had not been quite as keen as he had known it to be previously, but at tlie same time he had no fault to find with the quality of the sheep. Progress was certainly being made towards the elimination of unwanted fibres, but although its presence was not always obvious to the eye ho thought the time would come when the benzole test would be used to detect it. Referring to liis awarding of the championship to a shorn ram instead of to a woolly ram, Air Blair admitted that this was a departure from the common practice, but he could not see any reason why a sheep he regarded as the better one should be deprived of the award because it was shorn. In this particular instance the shorn ram was a splendid animal and worthy in every respect of the championship award. Commenting on the open classes of Romney Marsh sheep, Air A. Kirkpatrick (Gisborne) classed the quality as very good although the number of the entries was not quite what he had expected. In the champion ram class the award had gone to an animal which had been of particular conformation to the character of the type and showing every sign of tlie progress that had been made in Romney Alarsh breeding. Fine sheep had also been seen in both the champion and reserve champion ewes. He regretted tlie falling off in entries and considered stronger support should have been accorded tlie shorn classes. LINCOLNS. While expressing disappointment at tlie numerical strength of the Lincoln classes, Air M. P. Biemner, of AVaverley the judge, said that tlie quality bad been quite good. The champion ram as well as the hoggets had been fine woolled sheep and in very other way typical of the breed. The aged ewe class, Air Bremner regretted to say, had not been a ,very strong one. RYELANDS, LEICESTEHS AND CORRIEDALES. The judge of the above classes (Air I Andrew. Alarton) said that the hoggets in' the Ryeland sheep classes were quite up to standard as required by tlie breed type, being low set and full of quality for good mutton production. In the aged classes Air Andrew thought there could have. been more competition. In the Gorriedale section the exhibits generally were or good conformation to type and quality.

FAT STOCK

Praise of tlie quality of the fat stock was made by Air J. Webb, of Tailiape, who acted as judge of the section, the opinion being expressed by liim that it was quite up to the standard of Alanawatu stock. The fat sheep classes had been very fair except that most of the sheep had been too fat. In regard to the export lamb classes, Air Webb said the exhibition was wonderful. The placings had been hard to make and all the placed pens had contained lambs of breeding and. quality. Speaking of the lamb classes in which the carcases are to be judged at the next Winter Show, the judge said this was a strong class with the top lambs showing plenty of quality. There had hardly been a weak pen in the whole of the competition, and only one pen in which the exhibits bad been too fat. In fact he questioned whether it would have been possible to find lambs anywhere at this stage of the season in better condition than those he had judged. All through, Air Webb concluded, the competition had been keen.

In regard to the fat cattle, Air Webb said he was greatly disappointed.

ROAINEY AIARSH EWES

Satisfaction at the numerical strength and the competition in the natural condition Romney Alarsh ewe classes was expressed by Air J. Donald, of Featherston, judge of this section. Particularly pleasing had been the prize-winning sheep, the champion and reserve champion being of exceptional merit and true representatives of tlie breed. Air Donald, however, said he would like to draw the attention of breeders to the want of conformity in regard to the mouth of Romney Alarsh sheep and to the quality of the. wool. He had noticed evidence of liair in the wool and a close examination of the sheep had shown that water had penetrated the fleece, thus disclosing a weakness in the wool.

Describing tlic natural condition Soutlidowns, Air A. C. A 7 ile, of Bulls, warmly commended the number and quality of the entries. The compel, tion provided could not have been bettered at any. show, and in every respect the class as a whole was the best that had yet come forward at a Spring Show at Palmerston North. His task in making Ins awards had been most difficult, but adjudicating over such a wonderful entry had been most pleasing. . . . - Mr J. Linton, of Timaru, judge of the open Southdown classes, had terf for the south and was not able to be interviewed, but relating the remarks the judge had given them breeders stated that competition had been stronger than for many years past, while in no way had there been a falling off in the general high standard of Soutlidowns always to be seen at a Alanawatu Show.
