AN EMPTY HUSK.

JUDGE ON WOMAN’S LIFE. Major Sir Edward Durand, formerly of the Indian Army, was unsuccessful in his application to the High Court for a decree for the restitution of conjugal rights against Lady Vera Helen Durand, who is a daughter of the late Sir Robert Lucas-Tooth. The couple, who are childless, separated in March, 1932. Evidence was given that after 1922 the husband and wife spoke only about business matters, and, though they lived in the same house and had meals together, the husband liad not kissed his wife since 1919. The husband is comparatively poor, while his wife inherited £SOOO a year from her father, though her fortune has shrunk during the world crisis. The Judge said that Lady Durand was a person of inteligence and spirit. Hers was an empty husk of married life. The test in this case was whether the husband desired to resume cohabitation, but the Court had decided that lie did not intend to treat his wife kindly and well, so the petition would be dismissed.
