CHAMBERS AND AGRICULTURE

Tho Associated Chambers of Commerce conference to-day, after hearing n statement by Mr W. Downic Stewart, on the Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Bill, passed a motion emphatically protesting against the powers proposed to be given to the Commission of Agriculture to be set up under the Bill. Copies of the resolution wore immediately telegraphed to the Premier and the Minister of Agriculture. The resolution slates that tho Bill is unwiso and inequitable in many of its provisions and that the conference opposes such gross interference as is proposed with primary industries and inanv commercial businesses. Addressing the conference, Mr Stewart expressed the opinion that very substantial modifications were likely in the Bill when it was in the committee stage. Representations to the Government by the Associated Chambers and other bodies had, he said made the Government realise tho’absolute necessity of limiting the scope ol some of the clauses.
