JUDGING DAY

AT SPRING SHOW SPLENDID STOCK DISPLAY

Again, greeted with warm sunshine, the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Spring Show entered upon its second day with the prospect of another large attendance. To-day the stock were judged and a splendid display was made as the animals were paraded for the judges. The Kennel Club’s Show was also commenced.

PARADE OFANIMALS. ' AWARDING THE PRIZES. DOG SHOW OPENS. All cattle, slieep and horses, with the exception of thoroughbreds and trotters, were penned for judging this morning, and there were numerous keen critics round the enclosures and Btock pavilions when the awards were being made. Potato growers held a conference at the Breeders’ Club to discuss the improvement of marketing conditions, and this afternoon ring events were the principal attraction. The Manawatu Kennel Club’s show opened in conjunction with the major exhibition this morning, and dog lovers were afforded the opportunity of making an inspection of many fine specimens of the various breeds. Tonight there will be an exhibition of foil and sabre fighting in the stadium, also a special farce, conducted by the principal (Miss Zena Clarke) and pupils of the London School of Arms, Wellington. Keen interest is being shown m the competitive classes for wool fleeces, which are on display in the Entertainment Hall. Adjacent to these is an exhibit of sheepskins by the Massey Agricultural College, showing the different methods of dyeing and how faults can # develop through injury to the live animal. Fifty-two pupils of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School this morning engaged in a judging competition on a dairy cow. JUDGING COMPETITIONS. SCHOOL PUPILS DISPLAY THEIR . • SKILL. A judging competition, which was open to boys attending any primary or secondary school, was conducted to-day, the entrants being required to mark a card on the same system as employed by.a judge. The detailed placings in the class were: —Roland Shand 1, Ivan Hearsey and Arthur Barnett, equal, 2. There were eight competitors, all being pupils of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. A similar competition was conducted in the pig section, Mr E. P. Nielsen, of Tiakitahuna, being the demonstrator, and William Orchard and Robert Law returned aggregates the same as the judge, but the official, on checking back the individual sectional points, placed the competitors as under: —William Orchard 1, Robert Law 2, Ewen Grant 3. There ivere 16 competitors, all being pupils of the local High School.
