SPRING SHOW

INCREASED GATE TAKINGS PUBLIC’S GRATIFYING SUPPORT Showing an increase of £6B 5s 9d 'in gate revenue over the corresponding day of last year’s fixture, the first day of the Manawatu and West Coast A., and P. Association’s Spring Show, yesterday, favoured by brilliant sunshine, at- ~ tracted a large attendance.

COMPARISON OP TAKINGS. By 5 p.m., before the evening session had commenced, there was £207 14s in hand, the turnstiles having yielded £179 18s 6d, the stands £l3 19s, and car admissions (despite a redaction from 2s to Is) £l3 16s 6d. There was good patronage in the evening, with the result that these figures were augmented by a further £63 2s 6d. Besides this, there were 2311 privilege ticket admissions.

The opening day of the Spring Show in 1933 returned £202 10s 9d, in 1932 (a Royal Show) £3OB 10s, and in 1931, £2lB ss. Gratifying support is thus being given to the exhibition by the public.

RING EVENTS. ■ STEER RIDING. A GOOD EXHIBITION. As usual, the steer riding competition yesterday afternoon attracted the attention of a large number of people, both stands being comfortably filled, whilo the fence round tho oval was lined deeply. Anticipations of a good exhibition of riding were not astray, tor with few exceptions tho riders clung to their precarious perch with a determination which brought forth much applause. Some of tho riders drew more docile animals than others, and consequently were .not exerted to the same extent, hut, generally speaking, all tho animals bucked and plunged wildly and showed spirited exception to the untoward circumstances they found themselves in. Giving his comments on the exhibition of riding, the judge, Mr 4V. McL. Dowie, of Ilawera, said tho riders had practically all given good exhibitions, lint it had been difficult to determine who was the best for the reason that tho stoer played such an important part. A good rider on an active steer had a much hotter chance than an equally good rider on a sluggish animal, for tho reason that the latter beast did not call forth the best the rider could do. However, he was very satisfied with tho performances generally and considered the placings ho had made had been welLmcritcd. Tho following were tho awards: First (£TO and 4V. G. Shannon Challenge Cup).—L. Sinclair (Marton).

Second (£5). —L. McLean (Marton). Third (£3). —C. O’Connell (Tataramoa).

.Fourth (£1).- —F. S. Boyle (Mantttahi).

TIN HARE RACING

INT F RESTING INNO VAT lON

An entirely new attraction for a Palmerston North Show which claimed considerable public attention yesterday afternoon was tho tin hare racing.. Released from, a ]ion on the far side of tho oval, the greyhounds did not show tho least disinclination to dash in pursuit of the mechanical hare in front of them, the speed with which the latter, however, made the circuit of the oval giving them littlo chance to make a “kill.” It was a highly interesting novelty and one which gave every appearance of having repaid tho trouble undertaken in tile erection of the guiding wire and other requirements necessary for tho exhibition, tlio officials responsible being congratulated on the entertainment.

Some amusement was caused in the second heat, when tho apparatus <1 id not work with the usual speed and tlio dogs overtook tho hare and made a “kill.” In the other heats and the final, however, the dogs finished the course well behind the hare.

Tho following arc tho placings in tho boats and the final:

First boat.—Grand Sport I, Black Duke 2, Gold Trail 3, Bin Money 4; second heat, Gay Sheila 1, Nightly 2, Copyist 3, Uogiila 4; third heat, Davolo 1, Rcrl Manfred 2, Polvdora 3, Rebel Song 4; final, Gay Sheila 1, Black Duko 2, Davolo 3.
