THE AIR RACE
MACHINES ON FINAL STAGES. DANES’ FORCED LANDING. HEAVETT AND KAY STILL AT CLONCURRY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received October 31, 11.40 a.m. CHARLEVILLE, Oct. 31. The airman Alelrose left at 1.20 this morning for Melbourne, via Narromine and Cloncurry. Hansen and Jensen will continue their flight to Melbourne early in the morning. Running out of petrol yesterday after battling against a head wind from Darwin, they made a forced landing at Alalbon, twenty miles from Cloncurry,. where they replenished their supply, but the delay necessitated landing at Cloncurry in the darkness. Hewett and Kay are still at Cloncurry arranging for repairs. ARRIVAL OF STODARTS. PROSPECTS IN HANDICAP RACE. AIELBOURNE, Oct. 30. Sixth place in the air race was gained by Squadron-Leader D. F. Stodart and Pilot-Sergeant Iv. G. Stodart, who arrived at 11 a.m. direct from Ckarleville. They have good prospects in the handicap race because, despite much ill-luck, they did not spend any waiting time at places other than checking points, unlike Alessrs McGregor and AValker. Pilot-Sergeant Ken Stodart had evidently been shopping somewhere in Malaya, as bis first act was to produce a snakeskin bag as a gift for Ins niece, who was among those welcoming the fliers. The pilots were cheerful and, unlike others, appeared to have brought changes of clothing. They are the first Australians to finish in the race. There were scenes of extraordinary enthusiasm when competitors attended a gala performance at His Alajesty’s Theatre as the guests of J. C. AA’illiamson, Ltd. The audience made a demonstration which assured _ the visiting aviators of public appreciation of their achievements.
