SEATOWN PASSES.
WINNER OF MANAWATU CUP. Probably one of the greatest handicap horses Taranaki lias had in recent years, and certainly the best performer we have had under winter conditions in two decades, Seatown, that gallant chestnut son of Archiestown, has passed on to the Elysian Fields, comments the Taranaki Herald. Seatown was in his eleventh year, but his owner-trainer, Mr J. F. Butler, Stratford, saw that this fine horse would not stand the preparation necessary to tune him up to carry the huge weights he would have had to shoulder under winter conditions and, rather than sell him for a hack, decided that the kindest course would be to destroy the old champion. “It was the most unpleasant job 1 ever did,” Mr Butler informed the writer, “but it was better that Seatown should go off that way than be possibly knocked about and ill-treated as a hack.” Seatown met the best in New Zealand when we were particularly strong in middle-distance horses and among his important wins were two Cornwall Handicaps, a Mitchelson Cup and a Manawatu Cup. As well he ran thirds in each of those three big races and seconds in the Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay Guineas, New Zealand Derby, W.R.C. Champion Plate, Great Autumn Handicap, Harcourt Cup and Parliamentary Handicap.
