THE SPRING SHOW.

The Manawatu A. and P. Association has laid the foundation for a most successful SpringShow with the very fine list, of entries that closed at the high total of 4815. The increase over the corresponding- exhibition in 1933 is no less than 664. To achieve this result a good deal of energy has been expended, in which Mr Kissling has played a commendable part, and the Association’s executive officers . and members should be highly pleased. For several years past the Show has been held in the shadow of adverse economic conditions, but in the . pastoral industries improved prices for pedigree stock, for meat . exported, and for wool have given new heart to the industry, and vigour and confidence have regained much of the vitality that was impaired by producing at a loss. Unfortunately, the cloud over the dairying industry remains darkened by the very low prices ruling in London, but the liquidation of stocks last week lias given a stronger tone to the market and a higher level of values is now ruling. In spite of these conditions all the popular breeds of dairy cattle are admirably represented, and the stock display should be one of the best staged locally, apart from Royal Shows. The Association is now in its forty-ninth year and in 1935 will celebrate its jubilee. The occasion will be memorable in . the history of the city and district, for the Association has played a very valuable part in their progress. It has brought the country and all its rural activities to the city people, to impress upon them what we owe to. farming in its varied branches in our economic welfare. It has served also to unite town and country, to make for a happier state, in which the problems of both will be the more readily understood and sympathetically considered. In these days the smaller show associations are meeting with considerable difficulties in carrying on their activities which, together with the larger associations, have been of inestimable benefit in encouraging the use. of. the best bred animals and in improving the science of farming. Whatever the future has in. store for them the leading associations, of which Palmerston North’s is m the front rank, will survive because of their strong foundations, and the people of the city have reason to be proud and thankful for that fact To entertain the visitors to this week s Show a splendid programme of events has been arranged and a-iven flue weather the exhibition should be the great success hoped for.
