YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND

PRICES

There were no outstnding features in the markets on the Wellington Stock Exchange yesterday. A steady demand in most sections saw quotations well maintained, price movements showing only minor changes. The demand for Government loans ran mainly on the 4 per cent stocks, which were firm at about late rates, the 4 per cents. 1949, were done late on Saturday at £lO9 10s, and the 1955 maturity had business yesterday at £ll3 10s. Bank shaves showed little quotable change, except Reserve Bank, which advanced to sales at £6 11s 3d. Wellington Gas had unsupported buyers at 41s 3d, and P. and O. deferred stock was wanted at 21s 6d. Woollen shares were firm and unchanged. Breweries were a strong market. New Zealand recovered to 50s 3d, sellers 51s. Staples at 30s, and Tui at 565, were unchanged. Industrial and trading issues were in active demand. British Tobacco sold at 41s 4d. Colonial Sugar were wanted at £76, sellers asking 40s higher. Sharland were strong at 26s tor both issues, and New Zealand Drug were quoted at 795, with no response.
