HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated October 27, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow. —Poor demand at auction; 699 casks offered, of which 95 sold.'Present spot quotations are:—Mutton: Fine, 22s 6d; fair to good, 20s 6d to 21s 6d; dark to dull, 17s 6d to 18s 6d. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 21s 6d to 22s 6d; fair to good, 19s to 21s; dark to dull, 17s 6d to 18s 6d. Mixed; Fair to good, 19s to 21s; dark to dull, 17s 6d to 18s 6d. Gut, etc., 16s-6d to 18s 6d.

Hemp.—Manila market quiet but steady. Value “K” grade for October-December shipment, £l2 15s. Sisal market quiet and easier. Closing sellers for October-Decem-ber shipment, £l3 10s. Market unchanged on the basis of “fair” grade with nominal value at £l3 for October-December shipment.

Eggs.—Market firm. . English national pack, 17s to 22s 6d; ordinary pack, 17s 3d to 18s 6d; Danish, 13s to 16s 9d; Australian, 11s 3d to 12s 9d.

Apples.—Home and imported supplies, heavy. Washington and Jonathan, 10s to 11s; _ Oregon Newtown, 12s to 13s; Californian Newtown, 9s to 10s; British Columbia, Cox’s Orange, 8s to 12s; Jonathan, 9s to 11s; Mackintosh Red, 8s to 10s.

SYDNEY WOOL SALES,

A VERY FIRM MARKET.

SYDNEY, Oct. 29. At the wool sales to-day, 11,560 bales were offered, 10,625 being sold at auction; 2131 bales were sold privately. With very good competition from Yorkshire, more activity on behalf of Continental operators, and moderate support from Japan, the market was very firm at the closing rates of last week, while the better classes of skirtings advanced 5 per cent. Greasy Merino made 16d for seven bales from Moree.

The average price of the wool sold at the Sydney auctions last week was £l2 9s 2d a bale, or 9.4 d a lb.
