CHRISTIAN CHURCHES.
MEETING OF COUNCIL,
The quarterly meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations was held last evening, Rev. A. N. Scotter, 8.A., presiding. Also present were Revs. - J. Hubbard, M.A., H. L. Richards, Pastor A. Hinrichsen, Rev. R. Simpson, and Messrs T. 11. Hodder, G. H. Bennett, J. Candy, H. G. Sandford, D. W. Low, H. Brown, jR". S. Robinson, and S. Nairn (secretary). There were several apologies for absence.
Rev. Mr Hubbard opened the proceedings with prayer. The Labour Defence League wrote thanking the council for the letters it had written to the town clerk and Minister of Justice suggesting that an area be set aside for free speech meetings. The town clerk advised in this regard that the band rotunda had been set aside. The Minister wrote in acknowledgment and stated that free speech had never been opposed in the Dominion. The letters were received. The secretary of the Terrace End School Committee wrote thanking the council for conducting religious services in the school, which were stated to be looked forward to by the children .—Received. Mr Scotter said a request had been received from the Hokowhitu School to commence the services, and from the Terrace End School to extend those there. The stage had been reached where the help of approved laymen might be required.
RADIO SERVICES. The opeiator of station 2ZO (Mr J. V. Kyle) advised that Sunday morning broadcasts had been discontinued, and he expressed appreciation of the good work of the council in arranging for the conduct of the services. Should these be reinstated the station would be glad of the council’s help in this respect.—Regret was expressed that the sei-vices had been discontinued, Mr Simpson stating that Invercargill possessed facilities for radio services which were not granted in Palmerston North. On the motion of Mr Hubbard it was decided to communicate with the Post-master-General (Hon. A. Hamilton) requesting that he arrange for 2ZF to relay Palmerston North services instead of those from Wellngton. The matter was left n the hands of Revs. Scotter and Hubbard and Mr Robinson. ~
Consideration was given to the holding of. a missionary exhibition in. August next, during the school holidays. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church advised that the session would give support and desired to be connected with Maori work. It was suggested that the exhibition be held for a week in the De Luxe Hall.
Mr Scotter explained that it was proposed that each denomination provide . a court and stage a programme. It'was decided to-set up a committee comprising a ; minister and a layman from each denomination to draw up a programme.
