TOWED BY WHALE

TWO iMEN IN BOAT,

THRILL FOR FISHERMEN

OPOTIKI, Oct. 27.

To have their anchor rope entangled about a whale was the extraordinary experience which befell two Bay of Plenty fishermen, Constable R. P. Hira and Mr AVa-lker, licensee of the Te Kaha Hotel. The men were fishing in a calm sea off Te Kaha when they were surprised to see two whales suddenly break the surface within 20 yards of their small boat. Not wishing to lose their lines, the fishermen hammered on the gunwale of the boat. This frightened the whales, which disappeared. Suddenly one of the men remarked that their boat was drifting. The other fisherman said that it was only the current, and commenced to haul on the anchor. . Suddenly a way dashed the boat. Ihe men then realised that the anchor rope had somehow got entangled about qne of the whales and that they were being towed along by the monster. The pace became too fast, and when the boat was in danger of being swamped the men hastily cut the rope, htty fathoms being lost with the anchor.
