WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.

LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. A short trading week, due to the holiday last Monday, saw a reduction in tho turnover on tho metropolitan exchanges last week. Generally speaking, however, the markets were firm and active with an increased business in industrial and trading shares. Government loans were comparatively inactive, and the turnover was not groat. Sales were recorded as follow: Inscrbcd stock, 34 per cent., 1938-52, £llO 10s; inscribed stock, 4 per cent 1940, £lO5 2s fid and £lO5 ss; 4 p.c., 1946 £lO9 and £lO9 ss; 4 p.c., 1949, £IOO 7s 6d, £lO9 10s, £lO9 7s 6d, and £lO9 ss; 4 pc 1955, £ll3 10s, £ll3 2s fid, and bonds £ll3 10s; Dissented Stock 51 per cent 1/9/1937, £lOl. Local body stocks and company debentures were quietly firm. Business was restricted _ to Auckland issues, sales recorded being:—Auckland Power Board, 4 3 per cent. 1950, £106; Auckland Transport Board, 44 per cent 1948 £lO4 10s; and Gisborne bheepfarmers. 64 per cent., 1941, £lOl. Except for tho strength of Bank of New Zealand and Reserve Bank shares, tho bank section was featureless. The volume °f recorded business was smaller than usual, the course of sales being as follows.— Bank of New Zealand, 48s 3d, 48s 9d, 48s 7d, ‘4Bs 9d, 48s fid, 48s _ 9d, 495, 49s 3d, 495, 49s 3d and 495; Nahona of Now Zealand, 70s; National of Australasia £lO paid, £l2 17s, £l2 12s 6d, £5 paid £6 3s fid- New South Wales, £3l 17s 6d; Commercial of Australia, 16s Id, 16s, and preference £10; Union of Australia. £9 7s fid and £9 7s 3d; Reserve Rank, £o 10s do, £6 d lls, £6 10s 6d, £6 10s 9d, £6 11s, and and pastoral shares were inclined to be dull, except N.Z. Guarantee Corporation, which wore firmly traded at 5s sd, 5s 54d, and 5s 6d Goldsbrough Mort were weak on sales at 31s Id, 30 ? 4d3o= 3d. Other business in this section included. —Farmers’ Auctioneering, A preference, 21s 6d; Dominion Investment and Banking, 17s, Traders! Finance, contr., 3s; United Budding (Chch.), 20s 9d; and Invincible Buildin- Society, 955. In the insurance section, New Zealand and South British weio slightly below the high levels of recent weeks, but the market a farm one National sold up to 21s 9d New Zealand at 695, and Standard at 71s. Gas sha'es weie firmly held and business was restricted, the following sales being recorded:—Auckland Gas, 26s g lod and 26s lid; Napier Gas, prof £lO 2s 6d; Christchurch Gas, 10s paid, lfis 3d Coal mines were a little more active, Westport being traded at 19s Id Kaitanganta at 21s 6d and 21s 9d, and Renown, preference, at 2s sd. Woollen company ‘hares showed a firming tendency and there were unsatisfied buyers of Wellington at £5 11s 6d tor the ordinaries and £5 12s for the preference. Kaiapoi, 17s paid, had a deal at 13s 9d, and buyers were quoting 14s on Saturday. A fairly active demand for brewery shares developed during the week. New Zealand Breweries staged a good'recovery, sales being: 49s 4d, 495, 49s 3d, 49s 4d, 49s 6d, 49s fid, 49s 9d, 49s sd, 50s 50s 4d, and 50s fid. The only other business was a deal in Timaru contribulwhich sold at 7s 6d. Shipping com-

panics wore steady, but the only recorded sales were of Iluddart-Parkcr preference at 29s 9d and 30s, and Northern Steam, paid, 6s 7d. Kauri Timber sold at 193 6d, National Timber at 14s 9d, and Rotoiti at 3s 3d. There was a good run on N.Z. Refrigerating issues, which wero actively traded during the week. The £1 paid sold at 19s 6d, 19a Bd, and 19s 9d, and tho 10s paid at 9s 6d, 9s 73d, 9s 7d, and 9s Bd. Southland Meat sold at 75s lor the £1 paid and 37s 6d for the 10s paid. Industrial and trading shares were actively traded, especially Australian issues. Following tho announcement of the new share distribution and the halfyearly dividend, Colonial Sugar took a very sharp rise, and sales were made at the record figure of £BO. British Tobacco wore less active than in recent weeks, and after touching 42s fid. eased to 41s. Anthony Hordern showed a firming tendency. N.Z. Drug showed considerable strength, general sales being made at 803.
