Mrs J. R. L. Stanford, of Marton, is staying with Mr and Mrs R. S. Abraham at Paekakariki.

Miss Una Seifert, who is on the nursing staff of the Rawliiti Hospital, is paying a short visit to Feilding. Miss Cynthia Wilson recently returned to “Burleigh” (Bulls) from England. Suffering from a sudden serious illness, Mrs H. D. Bryant, of Manaltau, is at present a patient in a private hospital at Levin. Her friends will wish her a speedy recovery.

The engagement is announced in an exchange of Miss Bessie Gaisford, New Zealand lady golf champion, daughter of Mr H. Russell Gaisford, of Marton, and Mr R. S. Fullerton-Smith, son of Mr and Mrs F. A. Fullerton-Smith, also of Marton.

Miss Betty Jenkins, a pupil of Miss Jean Scott, of Palmerston North, was successful in the national dancing section at the Gisborne Show this week, gaining first place in the fling, sean truibhas and Irish reel; second in the sword dance, hornpipe and Reel o’ Tulloch, and third in the Irish jig, all over 16 years.

It is not often four generations travel about together, but Mrs J. Barritt and her daughter, Mrs W. H. Smith and the latter’s daughter, Mrs J. Richardson, with Mrs Richardson’s small son, all of Christchurch, have been the guests of Mrs J. Barritt’s niece, Mrs H. McCormick, of 14 Miller Street, Palmerston North. They returned to Christchurch to-day. GOLF. PALMERSTON NORTH LADIES’ CLUB. The championship of the Palmerston North Ladies’ Golf Club for the season was decided yesterday, when Mrs Coupe beat Mrs Bott. The winner is awarded the silver championship cup. CROQUET. CORBRIDGE STARS MATCH. The first match during the present season for the Corbridge Stars croquet trophies was played on the Manawatu Club’s greens yesterday afternoon. The holders, Mesdnmes Benfell and Sears, lost to the challengers, Mesdames Petrie and Manning (Oroua), 6—26. ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH. BIBLE CLASS REUNION. Marking the 41st year of the existence of a Bible class at St. Andrew’s Church, a reunion of past and present members was held at the Rosco rooms on Thursday evening. Greetings were received from a number of former members who were unable to he present. At a. suitable juncture, Rev. J. Hubbard extended a welcome to all former members and to the representatives of the church, remarking that it was indeed a happy way of renewing friendship. He also referred to the inspiration received from the past and the great challenge that lay in the future, stressing the fact of the continuity of the work and of the right to expect great things in the days ahead.

After the toasts to the church and the movement had been honoured, a short concert programme was given. The programme was as follows: —Vocal items, Mrs J. Paton and Mrs R. Donald ; elocutionary, Miss J. Spilman and Mrs J. Davidson; pianoforte solo. Miss M. Morris; ’cello solo, Miss J. Paton. Mrs J. Paton acted as accompaniste.

On behalf of the guests of the evening, Mr Young proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the performers and the young women’s Bible class for their happy thought in arranging such a gathering. The singing of the. “Old Hundredth” concluded an evening of good fellowship.

AWAHURI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. On Wednesday, the Awahuri Women’s Institute held a euchre and dance in aid of the institute funds. Under the direction of the M.C.’s, Mr W. Manson and Mr R. Bond, a varied programme of dancing, chiefly oldtime, was carried out. The euchre prizes, which were donated by members of the committee, were won by the following:—Ladies, Miss Howie 1, Mrs Humphries 2; men, Mr Hume l, Mr Marsh 2. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss D. Matthews and Mr J. Nicholson, and the lucky Gay Gordons by Miss P. Oliver and Mr W. Taylor. An excellent 6upper was served by the committee. Before presenting the euchre prizes, the president (Mrs Bond) took the opportunity of thanking those who had helped to make the evening a success, mentioning particularly, Mr Montgomerie, who had charge of the euchre, the M.O.’s, Mr W. Manson and Mr R. Bond, and the doorkeepers, Mr T. Manson and Mr J. Milligan. An orchestra provided excellent music for the dancing, which was kept up until the early hours of the morning. SOCIAL FUNCTIONS. A happy little gathering was held at the residence of Mrs R. Porter, of College Street, last evening, when a few close friends of Mrs J. Rowntree met to bid her bon voyage in view of Mrs Rowntree’s impending departure on a holiday trip to England. Bridge was played, and at a suitable juncture the hostess handed to Mrs Rowntree gifts from the company and conveyed to her the best wishes of her friends for a pleasant holiday amid old associations. Later it was Mrs Porter’s happy duty to also present to Mrs Rowntree the prize which went to the player who registered the highest number of points at bridge. Mrs Rowntree

will motor to New Plymouth to-mor-row, and thence to Auckland where she will link up with a Home-going boat. The sports committee of the day pupils of the Palmerston North Technical School held a social in the assembly hall last night. The programme was as follows: Guitar solo, G. Kidner; sketch, Gwen Hancox; pianoforte solo, H. Radford; solo, Daisy Lister; solo, Carol Burrows. “The Warblers” was a very popular item. Competitions were won by Sheila Heath and Betty PotA pleasant time was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs J. Worsfold, 297 Broadway, last evening, the occasion being a kitchen tea for Miss M. Oliver and Mr A. Cawood, who are shortly to be married. After a session of dancing to music provided by Miss Eva Turner and Messrs I. Speight and H. George, a large number of parcels were produced, some of them causing much amusement. Mr J. Flavell proposed a toast to the prospective bride and bridegroom. Mr Cawood suitably responded. Miss Oliver also expressed a few words of appreciation. Dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning, the company retiring after expressing appreciation to Mr and Mrs Worsfold for their hospitality. The annual social and dance of the Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held last evening, and proved to be a very successful function. The hall, which was delightfully decorated with spring flowers and streamers by the ladies_ of the committee, presented a pleasing sight. Items were given by Messrs Farmer, Lashley, Beattie and Mrs P. Guy, the dancing and games being m the control of Messrs Chatfield and Major. Community singing was a feature of the evening, being led by Mr G. Hansen, with Messrs Luxmore (piano) and Farmer (banjo) accompanying. At a suitable juncture, the president (Mr E. W. Ward) presided over a pleasing little ceremony in the cutting of the birthday cake, kindly donated by Mrs Robertson. The president referred to the tremendous growth of the branch over the last 12 months and the enthusiasm of the members, and called on Mr P. Guy (vice-president of the Feilding branch), Mr W. Olliver (district area officer) and Mrs Robertson (president of the Housewives’ League) in turn to address the gathering. Dancing followed the greetings and a .delightful evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” •
