PORT OF WELLINGTON
A BUSY FIVE YEARS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. A survey of official figures for the five years 1929 to 1933, both inclusive, demonstrates that the port of Wellington is the premier port of New Zealand in respect of tonnage entered and cargo handled. In only one respect, the average yearly value of exports durI ing that period, does Wellington’s chief rival, Auckland, lead. The total value of exports from Auckland during the five years was £65,166,740, a yearly average of £13,033,348. As against this Wellington’s total value of exports was £53,610,803, an average of £10,722,161. The position is reversed when the import values are compared. The Wellington total was £55,517,020 (an average of £11,103,404), compared with the Auckland figures of £53,596,220 (average £10,719,244). The capital maintains a very considerable lead in coastal shipping entering the port during that time, having a total of 7,302,317 tons, and a yearly average of 1,460,464 tons, as against Auckland’s total of 2,339,208 tons and yearly average of 467,842 tons. Wellington also has a slight lead in overseas shipping entering port—a total of 10,426,796 tons (average 2,085,359 tons), compared with the Auckland figures of 10,029,623 tons and 2,005,924 tons respectively. The total tonnage entering Wellington during the period was 17,729,113 (average 3,545,823). The corresponding Auckland figures are :—Total 12,368,831 tons, average 2,473,766 tons. The total manifest tonnage (in which transhipments are included twice) shows Wellington to lead with 8,991,355 tons for the period (yearly average 1,798,271 tons), compared with the Auckland total of 8,611,947 tons (average 1,722,390 tons).
