EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD ” OCTOBER 26, 1904.

Following firing on trawlers from Hull by the Russian Baltic fleet as the latter proceeded East, the British fleet had been ordered to be ready to sail, said London cables. Immediate reparations and apologies were being asked by the British authorities. A Danish pilot on board the Russian flagship said no had never seen such panicstricken sailors and commanders.

Bad weather had proved disastrous to farmers in Sandon and other districts south of tho Rangitikei River. Grain which had been planted was rotting ir. the saturated ground, while the majority of farmers had been unable to plant at all. A line of exceptionally heavy bullocks had been sold at Timaru at £l4 a head. A meeting of residents of Apiti had been held to make arrangements, if possible, to have a medical practitioner reside - in that district. A medical guarantee association had been formed.

Trouble had been experienced with the intake at the Tiritea dam owing to silt backing up on the upper side of the embankment. It was decided by tho Borough Council that the silt should be cleaned out as soon as the weather would permit.
