Sir J. Jarvis, High Sheriif of Surrey, who is promoting the scheme for the adoption of distressed areas by more prosperous counties, lias already received subscriptions amounting to £20.000 to help on the work. The first “adoption” is that of Jarrow-on-Tyne by the county of Surrey.
