FEILDING

FIREJOARD. QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Feilding Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr W. E. Carthew presiding. Also present were Messrs A. C. McCorkindale, V. M. Edgar, and D. S. N. McCartney. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. Fair. The Audit Office forwarded the bal-ance-sheet of the board for the year ended March 31, 1934, duly certified. —Received.

From the Department of Internal Affairs notification was received that volunteer firemen would not in future pay wage tax unless they had their meals at the station premises and received some payment for station duty. It was also' stated that no refunds would be available for wage tax already paid.—The secretary (Mr C. N. Tate) said the ruling of the Unemployment Board, as 6et out in the department’s letter, applied to the Feilding station hands who did not dine at the station premises. The letter was received, Mr Edgar commenting that it was unreasonable for the board not to grant a refund of the tax already paid by the men. The application of the brigade superintendent (Mr O. Sporle) for alterations to be carried out to the hot water service in the living premises at the fire station at a cost of. £l6 was deferred until the next estimates were being dealt with. The chairman said that the board had budgeted closely for this year’s working and the additional expenditure could not possibly be met. It was decided to make a grant of £8 4s to the brigade for the purchase of service honours, Mr McCartney pointing out that by doing this the board was encouraging the firemen to remain in the brigade and so become eligible for service honours. This meant that the brigade was being kept together, which was all to the good of the board. In adopting the superintendent’s report which recorded no fire loss for the quarter, members of the board commented favourably on the maintaining of the excellent low fire record the town had. The secretary recalled that he had been in Feilding for about three months and had not yet heard the fire bell ring. Accounts amounting to £323 6s 4d were passed for payment. The financial statement of the board showed that, following the payment of the quarter’s accounts, a debit balance of £59 Is 3d was left. MISSIONARY*ONION.
