(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 19. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Crs. W. Clayton, T. C. Thwaites, J. Curran, junr., R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, A. G. Mason, and J. Curran, senr. An apology for absence was received from Cr A. E. Hyde. A letter was received from the Institute of Architects asking what minimum height of ceiling is allowed under the building by-laws. Particulars are to be forwarded. The Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded a summary of the audited income and expenditure accounts for the year ended March 31 last. The Horowhenua Rugby Union forwarded £2 0s 6d, being 10 per cent of the gross gate takings at the Shannon Domain for the season 1934. The Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded u statement showing that charitable aid expenditure in New Zealand had increased generally from £55 per 1000 of the population per annum in 1925 and the figure for the year ended March 31, 1933, was £l2B per 1000 of the populatiqn. The secretary of the Municipal Association forwarded a report of proceedings of the conference regarding unemployment. A remit, ‘‘That the present Unemployment Board be replaced by district provincial boards which would receive finance according to (1) population or (2) the number of registered unemployed in the district or province,” had been referred to the next Municipal Conference. Several resoluations had been presented to the Prime Minister and other authorities concerned. Reporting on tho proposed redemption loan, the town clerk stated that the Loans Board was prepared to consider an application to raise a loan to pay off two loans of £llOO and £7OO, maturing in 1935 and 1936 respectively. The debenture-holder of the £7OO was willing to accept the amount at any time convenient to tho council, and the Public Trustee were prepared to make payment of the sinking fund held by him. The council resolved to purchase an electric clock and have it installed in front of the municipal buildings. The borough foreman reported that, as directed, the tins in the rubbish dump had been cleaned away from neighbouring property and poplar trees planted for protection. Tho Domain had been harrowed at a cost of 15s, and the first cutting of the grounds with the horse lawnmower had been done. He suggested that tho goal posts- and hockey nets be removed from the grounds until next season. The planking on two bridges had been nailed down and repairs carried out to the handrails; 30'chains of drains and water channels had been cleaned out. Recent representations were made to the Unemployment Board by the Buckley Drainage Board in the direction of obtaining financial assistance towards the cost of deepening drains in the area under the Drainage Board’s jurisdiction. The Commissioner of Unemployment has replied that it is unlikely that the board would be able to favourably entertain a straightout loan, but would give tho _ proposal careful consideration with a view to ascertaining if any assistance, probably by way of a subsidy, could be offered. In the game against Levin ladies on tho local golf links, Shannon ladies were victorious by 6 games to 4. Next Saturday tho Shannon men travel to To Matai, Palmerston. North, and Te Matai members play at Shannon. , Mr A. R. Blackwood, of the Public Works Department, Mangaore, lias been compelled to onter a private hospital in Palmerston North for a slight operation: At the September meeting of tho Shannon Women’s Institute, presided over by Mrs C. Easton, Miss Grant, president of the North Wellington Federation, was the guest of honour, being the recipient of a charming posy of spring flowers, made and presented by Miss Aim. After tho usual routine business, arrangements were mad o for some 23 members to attend the halfyearly federation meeting to be held in Levin. Mesdames K. Mitchell and J. T. Bovis were appointed delegates to the meeting. It was resolved to hold an , open flag 500 evening on the last Friday in the month. The limerick competition for the points prize met with hearty support and rosulted: Senior, Mrs O. Easton 1. Mrs Bovis 2, Mrs Clarkson 3; junior, Miss D. Davis 1, Miss C. Snelling 2. After afternoon tea had been served by Mesdames Snelling, G. W. Smith, S. Barber, Roberts, Roach, and Radford, Miss Grant gave an inspiring talk on institute progress and ideals, laying particular stress upon the joy of giving. A vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. Next month’s points prize competition is for a jar of orange marmalade, and the afternoon will be devoted to social items and a report, of the Dominion conference. The librarian reported 131 new novels in the library. Mesdames S. Pederson and M. Martin were elected new members, while Mesdames Doyle. Hodges, McMeeking and Miss Davis kindly consented to join up with tho Drama Circle.
