CONTROLLING BODY MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools Board and Technical School Committee was held last evening, Mr J. W. Rutherfurd presiding in the absence of Mr J. A. Nash owing to his parliamentary duties. Others present were Mrs M. Aitchison, Messrs A. J. Graham, W. R. Birnie, G. Tremaine, O. Monrad, and T. R. Hodder. The director of the Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported that for the week ending September 14 there were 184 classes with 14 full-time and 33 part-time teachers. The weekly hour enrolments wore 13,018, compared with 12,849 lasty ear. A donation of 10s had been received from Mr W. Peters for the kitchenette fund. The chairman and the director attended in August the annual conference of the Technical Education Association. A concert in aid of the kitchenette fund had brought a net return of £l9 2s 7d. Mr W. Devine gave a donation of £3 Is 6d, this being a rebate for the hire of chairs. The net proceeds of Daffodil Day would be about £sl. An audited statement would be submitted to the next meeting. Nine pupils gained successes at the speed shorthand examinations held in June. Throughout the year the Rugby, soccer and basketball teams played in competition games. Members of the staff gave very generously of their time on Saturdays and after school hours. Special arrangements were made for Miss J. Young, a member of the staff, to remain in Auckland on September 3, 4 and 5 to see classes at work at the Seddon Memorial Technical College. In consequence of Miss Partf'idgo’s resignation, approval was sought for Mr W. L. Birnie to take over two shorthand classes, and for Miss B. Holland to be in charge of two shorthand classes and one typewriting class until the end of the year. Mr J. Coley was relieving in place of Mr J. Marshall, who had been in hospital. A recommendation by the finance committee that applications be made for grants for a new forge furnace, for equipping a small motor shop, and purchasing a fire extinguisher for the assembly hall, was adopted, together with the director’s report. The rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) reported that the roll number was 358 and the average attendance 335'. A concert in aid of the school amenities fund was to be held shortly. The principal of the Girls’ High School (Mrs M. Rhodes) „ reported that the roll number was now 223. The school A basketball team won the Manawatu Association’s Saturday competition and held the Robert Cux>- They again held the Manawatu championship by defeating the Kelvin Grove team, winners of the Wednesday competition, by 30 goals to 8. Two members of the team, Patty Payne and Enid Sinclair, were selected for the representative team which visited Dunedin. The trees which were ordered had now been planted on the west side of the ground. The reports were adopted.
