BIG JEWEL THEFT.

SCOOP AA'ORTH £I4OO. AN AUCKLAND CRIME. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 21. The latest and most serious of the number of burglaries committed in Auckland city in recent weeks was discovered at midnight. The large modern James Pascoe, jeweller, in Karangahape Road, was entered and gold and jewellery valued at approximately £I4OO removed from the showcases just inside the front door, although the premises were well lighted. It is a three-storey building, specially constructed to be burglar-proof, but last night the thieves got on the roof and levered off the solid iron and concrete top of a manhole and sIM down into the workroom. They ransacked the accountant’s office and stole all the repair jobs which were kept there awaiting owners. They then descended to the ground floor, where they must have spent a considerable time working behind the counter, which was covered with dust sheeting. They carefully discriminated between gold and rolled gold articles, throwing the latter on the floor, but removing the diamond rings, gold rings, watches, studs, etc. At about midnight a constable at the back of the building discovered the doors at the cart entrance open and gave the alarm.
