PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, Sept. 19

The executive of • the Pahiatua branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union met yesterday, Mr J. H. Bremner presiding. The chairman said that the Dominion organiser (Mr O. Neiderer) had reported the following enrolments: Pahiatua 163, Kumeroa 27, Eketahuna 90, Aifredton 10, Tiraumea 9, making a total of 299 members. Mr Bremner also 6ul> mitted an account of what had been done in regard to a number of other matters.

The annual-bulb show of St. Peter’s Anglican Church was held yesterday. The number of entries showed a drop from those of last year. The judges were: Narcissus, Mr J. A. Nicholas (Woodviile); other blooms, Mr A. H. Ahrens (Kaitawa); decorative, Mrs G. L. (Woodviile); needlewoi'k, Mrs P. H. Mules (Woodviile). Luncheon and afternoon tea were served by the members of the Ladies’ Guild and Girls’ Club (Mrs R. C. Austin being in charge). The exhibits were very attractively set out and the entire arrangements were a credit to the secretary (Mr A. W. Hamilton) and a willing group of helpers. Valuable assistance was given by the entry stewards: Mrs W. H. Purdie, Miss Barnett and Miss Sylvia Taylor. The points prizes were won as follow: Challenge Shield for narcissi class: Mrs S. Turnbull (Woodviile) 29 points, 1; A. H. Ahrens, 21 points, 2. Kelsey vase for other blooms: Mrs W. Houston, 16 points, 1; Miss M. C. Suisted, 12 points, 2. Hodd Vase for floral decorative section : Mrs J. G. Green, 11 points 1; Mrs W. E ; C. Tylee 8 points 2. Tylee Cup for needlework : Miss S. Taylor and Miss M. A. B. Smith, equal, with 6 points. Mr A. S. Edwards, of the staff of the Pahiatua telephone exchange, has been transferred to Lower Hutt. The friends of Mr C. Bell, of Mt. Bruce, will regret to learn that lie is laid up with a broken ankle received in an accident. Mrs H. Bullin, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs T. Bason, Tudor Road, . Pahiatua. Mrs M. Howat, of Coonoor, who recently underwent a serious operation in a private hospital, is making a good recovery.
