KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean, presiding. Also present were Crs. N. Y. Shannon, W. Hair, F. E. Tappin, J. H. Williamson, F. O. Stack and. W. P. Shaw. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. T. D. Wood and J. A. T. Brown. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Works Department, forwarding details of the main highway annual estimates for 1934-35, covering both construction and maintenance. The items in the Kiwitea county approved by the Main Highways Board are: N-o. 52 main highway, AwahuriMangaweka via Kimbolton (Cheltenham Coulter’s Line), preparation for sealing, £3375, £3 for £1; sealing £IOOO, £2 for £1; No. 53 main highway (Kimbolton-Apiti bridge), maintenance work £205, £3 for £1; No. 377 main highway (Feilding-Hunter-ville), construction of Harres bridge, £430, £2 for £1; maintenance work, £607, £3 for £1. —Received. From Hon. J. G. Cobbe, acknowledging receipt of a oopy of the resolution passed by the council in support of a protest made by the Wanganui County Council concerning the operations of the Transport Board, in rural districts.—Received. From 'the Palmerston North Hospital Board, forwarding a summary of the audited income and expenditure accounts of the board for the y-ear ended March 31, 1934, and a statement showing the growth of charitable aid expenditure in New Zealand during the last 10 years. —Received. From the New ' Zealand Counties’ Association, advising that the Transport Co-ordination Board had decided to investigate the problem of motor taxation and was obtaining the views of certain transport and road interests, and the board would be glad to have any evidence or representations the association might desire to submit. —Received, the council not discussing the question. From Mr McKinnon, drawing the council’s attention to several bad corners on the Te Para Para Road. —Referred to the overseer to report to the council. From Mr Hensliaw and other ratepayers, complaining of stock bcitm a.t large on the Terrace Road, Kimbolton. —Referred to the ranger for investigation. GENERAL. The overseer was instructed to purchase the necessary grass seed for sowing on county property in the Upper Ivawhatau. The council agreed to erect a secure fence on the boundary between council property and that of Mr A. Morgan, Rangiwaliia, on a 50-50 basis as suggested by Mr Morgan. COUNTY FINANCES. The county bank balances were all reported to be in credit, as under: County fund account, £519 19s 8d; employees’ accommodation special loan account, £26 9s lid; Kimbolton cemetery account, £l7 13s 4d; land fund account, No. 2, £l2O 11s 4d; Waituna cemetery account, £3 16s 4d; Rangiwahia. cemetery account, £9 5s sd. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr F. H. Eggers, county overseer, reported, inter ana, as follows:Cheltenham Riding: Pot-hole repairs have been carried out on the Nos. 52 and 377 sections of main highways and similar work has also received attention on, roads other than main highways. «These roads havo also been trimmed by the power grader. Tile roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work as well as taking delivery of maintenance metal. The contractor has delivered 466 cubic yards in, the riding, all contracts being completed. Kiwitea riding: Pot-hole patching work has been carried out on No. 52 section of the main highway. This road has also received frequent attention from the power grader. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work. The county truck delivered 149 cubic yards of maintenance metal during the past month. In conjunction with the councillor for the riding I have inspected the proposed road extension near the Te Awa bridge, and have decided to carry out the work with our own staff and plant. The work will be put in hand in about a week’s time. Waituna Riding: The roadman has attended to road surface work and the cleaning out of water-tables on the section of No. 377 main highway. This section of highway has also been trimmed by the power grader plant. (Minor repair work lias been carried out on tlie Rangitikei Valley Road South and the road surface trimmed by the grader. The contractor has made a start delivering maintenance metal on the section of No. 377 main highway. Ongo Riding: The roadman has attended to pot-hole repairs and general work; also taking delivery of maintenance metal on the section of No. 377 main highway. This section has also been trimmed by the grader. The contractor completed the delivery of maintenance metal on No. 377 main highway on the 12th inst. The total quantity delivered was 555 cubic yards. Kimbolton riding: The sections of Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have ben trimmed by the power grader and pot-hole repair work carried out. A few subsidences took place on No. 52 main highway and the repairs will be carried out as soon as the timber comes to hand. Repair work has been attended to on roads other than highways. The roadman has assisted with metal carting in the Kiwitea riding. The quantity of metal delivered by the county truck during the month was 11 cubic yards. —Adopted.
