RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Gar Vaals, a two-year-old bay colt by Vaals from Gortyn, dam of Sabatini, has joined P. R. Pope’s stable at Takanini. No Doubt is still in the paddock in Taranaki, and a report states that he is to be operated upon for his wind affection.

The two-ycar-old Panegyric, by Honour from Eulalie, has had to be eased up, as he is suffering from, the effects of a splint. Wanganui reports make it evident that Entail, the two-year-old by Posterity from Episode, is improving and promises to be hard to beat in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. * P. Johnson, the trainer of the Taranaki Hunt Cup winnor Razoor, can claim previous ' successes in the event with his own horses, Simple Sam and Te Toa (twice) having won for him. Matorni, who showed very useful form last season, is still spelling on his owner’s property at Waitoitoi, and he will not bo put into work for some time yet. The Stratford mentor, J. Butler, is stated to have a likely sort of maiden in Chikara, a three-year-old by Kiosk from Pouma, a good performer in her day. Cftikara raced somewhat greenly at New Plymouth. Mother Superior, the leading two-year-old of last season, is due to make her reappearance in the Seafield Handicap (71 furlongs) at the Wanganui meeting. She is weighted at 71b above the minimum. Rotrospect, by Autumnus from Telescope, has produced a filly to Magnus, this being the first New Zealand foal by the imported horse, who is a son of the Tetrach and the Oaks winner Princess Dorrie. Northern reports state that On Parade benefited by the outing he had at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, and he is now hitting out with much more freedom in his work. When properly seasoned he is expected to pay his way. The Auckland owners, Messrs O. Nicholson and E. R. Davis, have purchased Cliromadyne, and the Quin Abbey gelding has joined R. S. liagby’s stable at EUerslie. It • is intended to try him as a hurdler. A likely-looking novice in work at Ellerslie is stated to be Te Hai a three-year-old gelding by The Ace from Elsie Aroha, by Elysian from the Seaton Delaval mare Te Aroha. This maiden comes from a very successful family. Tregilla, who broke both forelegs on, Thursday, has been destroyed (says a Sydney cable). A veterinary surgeon said the horse’s organs were diseased and that there was no hope of saving him, Variant, who is now trained by P, V.. Mason at Riccarton, is reported to have developed into a fine looking three-year-old. The daughter of Limond and Motley displayed brilliant form last season, and' she is to be put through a special preparation for the New Zealand Oaks.. The Wanganui owner-trainer L. G. Paul will bo represented in the maiden event at Wanganui by Amante, a four-year-old chestnut mare by Chief Ruler from the Limond mare Adorable, a sister to Alloway, and a half-sister to All Supreme and Alcides. The Trentham trainer A, Goodman has a black filly by Marianna.—Star Lady called Starma in work. This filly is a three-quarter sister to that great performer Star Stranger, and gives indication of being above the average. Ho also lias Hark Red, by Greyspear from Red Ribbon. The dam. was a good performer, but she has proved a very shy breeder and Dark Red is the first of her progeny to go into training. Sir Charles Clifford has sold the four-year-old mare Scarlet Rambler, by Day Comet from Brambletye, to Major G. E. Hutton, oi Bangor, In. the early part of last season this mare showed promise of developing into a useful stayer, and though she has not come up to expectations, she may make a successful brood mare. The New Zealand trainer P. Brady, who was located at Flcmington when he first went to Australia, ’ and has been at Mentone for over two months, has returned to Flcmington with Royal Visitor and the two-year-old Teak. Spearsong, who was also taken to Australia by Brady, is now being trained by W. Roberts, and is stated to be a promising sort. The Durban Turf Club’s meeting on Saturday, July 28 last, was memorable in that the totalisator for the first time in the history of racing in South Africa passed the £70,000 mark for a single day. The turnover amounted to £70,972 for the nine races, including £19,242 on the July Handicap and £7640 on the double pool, both South African records. The winning double combination returned a dividend of £835 12s ; but this was well short of record dimensions.

NEW ZEALAND CUP FIELD THE WORTHY AND THE UNWORTHY.

As in former, years the list of horses nominated for tho New Zealand Cup contains a big percentage whose owners are apparently lost in fond admiration for their representatives, or who entertain tho impossible hope that tho animal can be moulded into a stayer. Each year finds many whose claims for inclusion in. such a class of event are fully earned, but quite frequently there are all too many who are not deserving of a nomination fee being expended upon them. This year’s field finds 59 entered, and of the number not more than half a dozen stand out as proved stayers, while the remainder will keep the handicappcr busy sifting the oats from tho chaff. Peculiarly enough, there is not a single former winner included in the 1934 field, for they have cither been retired or have broken down. Those two good performers, Fast Passage and Palantua, can be included in tho latter category. With Peter Jackson and Jonathan figuring among the entrants, the field is not altogether devoid of quality, while Vintage, Argentic, Davolo, Minerval and Ventrac aro a quintette of southerners who will rio doubt be well up in tho handicaps. Vintage lias a Hunedin Cup to his credit and Minerval won the Auckland Cup last year. King’s Knave, Polydora, Spiral and Sweet Agnes arc prospective stayers, but Princess Doreen, Gold Trsil, and Red Manfred appear to represent brilliance rather than real staying power. There are also included in the field five three-year-olds (The Khedive, Synagogue, Pawky, Sporting Blood and a Paladin— Fairform gelding), hut tho two-mile race has almost invariably proved too severe a task for a three-year-old, and in the last 30 years the only candidate of that ago to "figure in the records is Indigo, who dead-heated with Warstep in 1914 when in receipt of 131 b from tho Martian — Stepdancer marc. No fewer than 34 sires are represented in the list. Limond and Chief Ruler each have five representatives; Hunting Song, Lord Qtiex and Arrowsmith three; Nigger Minstrel, Kilbroney, Silverado, Night Raid, Paper Money, Sutala, Polazel, Solferino, Gainscourt, Shambles and Rabbi have two; and Thespian, Acre, Black Ronald, General Latour, Gay Shield, Sandstar, Tractor, Capo Horn, Balboa, Paladin, Manfred, Comedy King, Grundcourt, Pombal. Day Comet, Valkyrian, Leighton and Some Boy one each.
