MANAWATU RACING CLUB,

FIFTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT

The fifty-fourth report of the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club, to be presented by the president (Mr C. Louisson) at the annual meeting, states :—The totalisator turnover for the summer meeting, 1938, and the autumn meeting, 1934, amounted to £69,694, a decrease of £4519 on the previous year, this being accounted for by the inclement weather experienced during the summer meeting and to the fact that owing to the early Easter our autumn meeting was held the week before the holidays. During the year the club gave in stakes £5945, an increase of £415 on the amount given for the 1932-33 season. The win and place system of betting was in operation at the Chrjstmas meeting, but for the autumn meeting the one pool system was reverted to. After allowing for £465 by way of depreciation the income and expenditure account shows a debit of £lO3 4s 4d. The training tracks and facilities have been kept in good order, several of the racecourse buildings having been painted during the year. It is with deep regret that your committee have to record the death of Mr H. Gjllies, who rendered such excellent _ service on the committee over a period of 46 years; also Mr P. F. O’Connor, who did good service as honorary timekeeper for some years. Your committee desire to thank the honorary officials and permanent staff for the very capable way in which their duties were performed.
