THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AUGUST 6, 1904. Snow had fallen in Palmerston North for about an hour from 9 a.m. Work was forgotten. and for. two hours snowballing was indulged in. A wedding party was vigorously snowballed and the Mayor received a fusillade. A Chinaman who had been pelted by several young ladies surprised them by weeping bitterly. It was fully_ ten years since such a fall had been experienced in the town. The proposal had been made that Taihape should be lighted by electricity. An exhaustive examination of the Hautapu River for power purposes had been made. At the opening of the Manawatu Poultry Association’s Show in Palmerston North it had been announced that in the previous year the Government had exported 93,000 birds.

A distinct feature of the struggle between the Japanese and the Russians was the Japanese Red Cross Society, said a leading article. The arrangements of the Japenese Red Cross were stated to be as perfect as they could be. A subscription list had been opened so that those who desired could contribute to the funds of the Beautifying Society which had won commendation for its work in Palmerston North.

Lambing had commenced in the Fitzherbert district, but the weather was against good percentages. Bookmakers had been present at the Woodlands Hunt Club’3 (Hawke’s Bay) meeting in large numbers. Most of the items in the Palmerston North borough estimates had dealt with the formation of kerbways and metalling streets. The largest item in the list had been of £B4O for the grading and metalling of the full width of Main Street from the Square to West Street. New lamps and the change-over to them, were estimated, to cost £2OO, and the metalling of Rangitikei Street from the Square to Featherston Street a like amount.
