FARMERS’ UNION

MANAAVATU PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE.

The monthly meeting of the Manawatu provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held today, Mr J. A. McLeavey presiding. Others present were Messrs J. Boyce, J. T. Kent, H. McLeavev, H. Bowling, B. G. Gower. L. H. Best, A. G. Dear, J. Hodgson, R. C. Bishop, J. Gallagher, L. Ballinger and J. D. Avery. Consideration was given to a motion brought forward by Mr Avery that the resolutions carried in December, 1933, relative to the election of provincial executive members be rescinded. These were: (a) That Hie provincial executive be composed of one delegate from each branch; (b) that each branch be requested to nominate its representative in writing signed by the branch secretary prior to the annual meeting, and that failing a nomination from any branch, tlic annual meeting reserve the right to fill the vacancy; (c) that officers of the provincial executive be elected from the delegates constituting the provincial executive. The motion was lost after a brief discussion. The president submitted a report on the proceedings at the Dominion conference. He expressed the opinion that it would be productive of some good, and said the Dominion executive was doing excellent work. Mr H. McLeavey, another delegate to the conference, supplemented these observations. A resolution of sympathy with the Dominion secretary (Colonel J. Pow) in his illness was passed, and it was decided to forward him a letter congratulating him on his progress towards recovery. Mr Bowling brought forward a remit that, owing to Government regulations making it necessary to use boiling water for washing milking machines and all dairy utensils, the executive appeal to the power boards to give a continuous service instead of the switcch-over, without further cost. Mr H. McLeavey seconded the remit, stating that such a service would confer great benefits on the farmers. Mr Boyce said there was no harm in trying the remit, but he doubted if the request would be granted, as the board had to consider the peak load factor.

The remit was approved for the submission of representations to both the Horowhenua and ManawatuOroua Power Boards.
