A new water supply scheme for Nelson from the Roding River, at the head of Aniseed Valley, capable of supplying the needs of the city and of adjacent suburbs if so desired, has been adopted by the Nelson City Council. The estimated cost is £55,000. The resolution “That this meeting is strongly opposed to any levy on wool” was passed by a meeting of Wanganui slieepowners yesterday, which had been called by the Farmers’ Union for the purpose of discussing the proposed wool levy. Mr T. Currie, president of the union, presided. Several speakers contended that the country was overburdened with taxation.

A motor-cyclist had a narrow escape from death by exposure on Monday night after being thrown from his machine near Warkworth. He was rendered unconscious and lay by the side of the road until the morning. He was Mr Charles von Ziarno, single, aged 30, of Warkworth, who is employed by the Public Works Department. Proceeding along the road about 7 o’clock a local fanner came across the injured man and, thinking him to he dead, telephoned the police. He returned to tho cyclist and was making a closer examination when Mr von Ziarno partially recovered consciousness.

Urging that the Unemployment Board should be asked to refund to local bodies unemployment relief taxation for distribution and administration in each particular district, the president (Mr J. A. McLeavey), at the meeting of the Manawatu executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to-day, suggested that a remit on those lilies be forwarded to the Dominion executive. He said he failed to see why such a scheme of administration, with deductions for all necessary costs, should not be feasible. Mr J. Boyce considered that the hospital boards might receive the funds to undertake the administration with the organisation, which they had available. It was decided, after a brief discussion, to take no action.
