(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Aug. 3,

Arbor Day was fittingly celebrated yesterday, when tree planting in.the new beautifying area opposite the school grounds in Plimmer Terrace was carried out. One hundred and fifty assorted shrubs and trees wero planted by the Mayor and members of the Borough Council, assisted by school pupils under the charge of the headmaster and assistant master. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) referred to the early days of Shannon and the present day beautifying of the town which was being conducted by the council. The headmaster (Mr I. McDonald) gave an interesting address to the children on the importance of Arbor Day. Mr J. Curran, junr., chairman of the Beautifying. Committee, called upon the Mayor to plant the first tree. From then on the area presented a busy scene and promises to be a successful extension of the scheme which has already added greatly to the appearance of the main thoroughfare. The card evening arranged by the Mayor’s Relief Committee realised £3, the prizewinners being: Ladies, Mrs MoLaggan 1, Mrs Davis 2, Airs Roach 3; men, Air J. Osborne 1, Air J. Bovis 2, Air J. Shaw 3. Three nominations have been received for the two vacancies on the directorship of the Shannon Dairy Company—Alessrs R. W. Taylor, J. Chryetall (sitting members), and A. Seifert, Palmerston North. Air j. Hallam leaves on Saturday for a tour of the South Sea Islands. Air A. Semple, postmaster, has resumed his duties after his recent indisposition. Winners at the Tuesday afternoon card play were: Mrs AlcLaggan 1, Airs Butler 2. Shannon were defeated in the hockey match played at Paraparaumu by Otaki, on Wednesday, three goals to nil. Airs C. Easton is visiting Wellington as the local representative of the Plunket Society. The Unemployment Board has notified the Borough Council that the Alain Highways Board proposes to undertake a traffic census of the whole of the more important highways and roads of the Dominion and asks local bodies to co-operate by meeting any request by the Alain Highways Board for available Scheme 5 men to take the tallies.
