RANGITIKEI.

AIARTON, Aug. 2. The Rangitikei County Council met to-day, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple presiding. The Local Government Loans Board wrote declining to sanction a loan of £IOOO for the Watershed Road unless the council lends the money under section 45 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1933. At a previous meeting the council had decided against this course, but the letter from the Loans Board put a different complexion oil the matter, the chairman said. In short, it was maintained that the council, being in a strong financial position, could not in fairness expect to raise the loan outside. There was a long discussion as to whether the lending from the general account would create a dangerous precedent, but it was pointed out that each case would be considered on its merits. It was therefore unanimously ' agreed to lend the £IOOO, the term to be 20 years. The Public Works Department advised of the payment of £2llO 3s 3d in main highway subsidies, while the Treasury forwarded £625, being the balance of subsidy on 1933-34 general rates. The matter of arranging for a traffic census to be taken at the direction of the Highways Board at the end of August was left in the hands of the engineer. On the Marton Park yesterday, Wanganui ladies’ lnockey representatives defeated Oroua by four goals to nil.
