EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 25, 1904.
A Gaming and Lotteries Amendment Act to bo introduced in the House of Parliament proposed to make consultations illegal in New Zealand, whether promoted in New Zealand or elsewhere, nnd to prevent lottery agencies conducting business in the colony. The Bill was also intended to make pakapoo and fantan illegal. It had been stated in reply to a deputation that the best boring appliances in the world were to be obtained to speed up the work o£ construction of the Midland Railway in the South Island. Statements were being made that the Japanese were purchasing, through agents, railway engines and other railway materials which 'they were proposing to use on the Manchurian railway, at that time controlled by Russia. A Rugby football match between Manawatu and Dannevirke had resulted in a win for the former by 20 points to nil. The Minister of Public Works was to be asked to sanction the carriage of goods on the railway as far as Taihape, as the line had been completed to that point. A meeting had been held at Feilding, when it had been decided to appoint a canvasser to collect sufficient shares to form a bacon company. Some 800 shares were to be laken up and between 500 and 600 had been promised. The sum o£ £IOOO was required.
The crew of the British steamer Malacca, which had been captured by tho Russians, had been landed at Port Said, while the captain was hurrying to England to report to the Government. It was reported that tho captain had nailed his colon's to tho mast, while the Russian commander had torn them down and hoisted tho Russian flag. The British Press was demanding re-' dress.
