The lowest score of their tour to Hate—230—was all the Australians could compile against the Gentlemen of England in an innings of mediocre batting. In their reply, - tiio home side showed a big improvement on their first innings strike of 177 and compiled 287 runs, the chief contributors being Lyon (67), Holmes (67), and Robins (64). At stumps Australia had scored eleven runs without loss.
The hottest day of their tour greeted the Australians for the resumption of the match. Before passing the Gentlemen’s score, the tourists lost Chipperfield, who, playing forward, was badly beaten by Read. Barnett was out in attempting to hit Holmes, tire score then being eight wickets for 178. Then Grimmott and Ebeling figured in a solid stand before Brown’s legbreak beat Ebeling, who was caught at the wicket. Grimmett and Wall raised 200 in 175 minutes, the latter batting exceptionally well. Australia’s last three innings have been progressively their lowest on the tour. The innings occupied 190 minutes. Brown bowled well, improving his Test prospects. Gentlemen reopened at 12.30 and Dawson was cleaned bowled by Wall in the latter’s second over. Five thousand spectators were present after lunch. Walters and Lyon scored freely. Grimmett was not bowling well, allowing the batsmen to score many runs from cuts and glances. Grimmett then improved and, driving Walters back to the crease again, dismissed him leg before, the score being 2 for 74. Valentine pulled a ball into the wicket. Lyon punched McCabe and Chipperfield for 4’s, and then, in attempting a big hit, was bowled. He batted for 125 minutes in a chanceless and attractive innings. The score now was 4 for 126. . ’ Lowndes attempted an unwise run and was run out as the result of smart fielding by Bromley after six runs had been added. BATSMEN ON TOP. Holmes and Robins hit fearlessly and had added 61 in 35 minutes by tea_. After 200 had been passed in 195 minutes the batsmen seemed completely on top. Holmes’s olf-side play was particularly powerful. The partnership was worth 102, in 65 minutes when Holmes gave a. simple catch at square-leg. In a brilliant display lasting 115 minutes he had hit ten 4’s. . . Grimmett, returning at 254, had Robins stumped. The tail-enders offered some resistance, the Gentlemen finishing 234. runs ahead. Barnett and Ebeling had scored eleven in ten minutes for Australia before stumps were drawn. Scores:—

In league cricket Merritt (New Zealand) took nine wickets for 39 runs.
