In the House of Commons, tho Chancellor (Mr Neville Chamberlain), ■'questioned regarding the Government’s attitude regarding the Free State indebtedness, declined to state the terms on which he was prepared to settle the matter. He explained that if the Free State paid its arrears and promised to pay in full in future that would be taken into account, but in the course of warfare of this sort things occur which, after a time, are difficult to remove. , Nevertheless, lie adhered to Mr J. H. Thomas’s statement that, when the Exchequer was recouped for the loss sustained through the Irish default, the duties would cease.
