EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” JUNE 19, 1904. The settlers in the Pohangina Valley had formed a working bee and put in extensive protective works at the ferry where the river was encroaching on the bank. Later, floods had carried away all tho works except ono groyne. The dairy staff of the Department ot Agriculture was to bo represented strongly at the Winter Show at Palmerston Norm. Among those present were to bo Messrs D. J. Cuddie (acting-Dairy Commissioner), J. Pedersen, W. M. Singleton, and A. G. Shirley (instructors). - In a stubborn battle the Russians had been routed by the Japanese, said a London cable. Tho third and fourth Russian batteries of an artillery brigade were cut to pieces and 13 out of 16 guns rendered useless and abandoned. ,It was feared that the victims of tho General Slocum steamship disaster numbered 1200, said a Now York cable. Some 530 bodies had been and 600 people wore still missing. Tho lifebelts were not buoyant, the lifeboats were fastened down, tho fire liose- burst as soon as it was used, and the pumps refused to work. The Government steamboat inspector, who had been accused of bribery, had been suspended. The erection of cool storage appliances at Palmerston North was being advocated. The suggestion had been made in England tliaj the National Telephone Company should bo bought out by the Government. Lord Stanley had said that the Government was against the compulsory purchase ef the company. If negotl ations for the purchase of tho company failed tho Government would consider what action would be necessary in regard to competition. The Palmerston North Borough Conn cil had accepted a tender for the breaking of stones for road metal at llfd per cubic yard.
