RANGIOTU

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, June 18. The leadership in the McKelvie Shield competition was still maintained by the ! Awahuri juniors when they comfortably j defeated Huia (present holders of the shield) on the latter’s grounds by the I margin of 16 points to 5. Exceptional interest was evinced in this match and Awahuri’s victory places them in a reasonably secure position for championship honours, i Though the game was keenly contested, | brilliant back, displays by the opposing sides were generally lacking, especially witif the home side, consequently the game throughout was mostly of a hard, forward nature. The reds (Awahuri), however, when the chances offered made uso of their backs to good advantage, the movements generally being instrumental in bringing them success. Soon after the kick-off the reds swung into action and with a strong forward rush downfield drove the whites (Huia) well into their twenty-five line, which eventually enabled Goffe to secure from the ruck and score a clear-cut try in loss than two minutes from the commencement. The kick at goal failed. Play of an oven nature followed for some considerable time. Then the red forwards came away again to tho attack headed by Beattie and the Matthew Brea., resulting in Taylor scoring. Perawiti converted. An offensive launched by the whites penetrated far into red territory, but Lewis at full-back saved. The Huias were going strong in red territory when suddenly the ball shot out to Tahu (reds) on the wing. He swiftly turned defence into attack with a tricky side-stepping solo run from practically his own twenty-five to score the most spectacular try of the day. Perawiti, from a fair angle, goaled. The change-over saw the whites rally strongly with S. Pearce and D. Donaldson prominent in tho attacks. A determined effort by the whites to break through was momentarily saved by Lewis, .who lined to his twenty-five flag. From the linc-out the whites cleared and close following up by I. Dunford and E. Donaldson resulted in the latter scoring Huia’s only try for the day. S. Matai converted from a good angle. Tho last quarter spell was productive of much hard forward play, with the territorial advantage to tho reds, the whites forcing on several occasions. A dangerous red attack was saved by P. Hill with a well directed line kick to neutral territory. Immediately afterwards the reds came away. again with the backs in action, Perawiti almost scoring after a strong run. A line-out in Huia's twenty-five gave Connell a chance to secure and score the final try of the day. The kick at goal failed. Mr IV. Larkins controlled the game. Tho local school girls’ basketball team defeated Glen Oroua by the narrow margin of 6 goals to 5 after a most interesting game.

Owing to a number of their members sustaining injuries in recent matches, the Huia seniors failed to field a team against Awahuri last Saturday, consequently losing by default.
