CENTRAL RELIEF

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the executive of the Palmerston North Central Relief Committee was held yesterday, when the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) occupied tile chair. Also present were Messrs 11. S. Abraham, A. A. Langley,. C. Young, W. It. Kells, P. S. Larcomb (hon. treasurer) and Mrs Aitchison. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdnmes Mansford, Shaw, and Palmer and Messrs Jacobs and K. G. Chamberlain (hon. secretary). Avenues for the relief of the unemployed, advanced by Mr It. S. Abraham, were productive of some discussion, and a sub-committee comprising Messrs Abraham, J. C. Young, and A. J. Phillipps was set up to go further into the mattei-. The officer in charge of the food depot reported as follows:—The total number of rations issued for the fourweeks ended June 2, 1934, was 1925, an average of 481 a week, a total increase of 119 and an average increase of 30 a week compared with the previous four-weekly period ; 3937 loaves (7874 lb) of bread were purchased and ' 146 loaves were donated by Messrs Meadley and Gardner and Messrs Boniface Bros ; 10481bs of butter were purchased. The usual anonymous donation was received through Messrs Watson Bros., Ltd., of 2001bs flour, 200ibs oatmeal, 701 b sugar, and 31b tea. From the community gardens 10,2001 bof potatoes and 18001 bof mixed vegetables were received. Major Rose and Mr Owtram sent in BSOlb of apples and 3001 b of vegetables came in from other donors. Wood totalling 298$ bags was issued and 75 pairs of boots were repaired. From the clothing repot about 40 persons were assisted weekly.

Mr Langley reported on the supply of wood required and indicated that lie had in view another source from which wood might bee procured. Accounts totalling £145 5s 9d were passed for payment.
