THE BAYLY CASE

ADDRESS CONTINUED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 19. At the Bayly trial on the resumption of Ins address Mr E. H. Bonn croft Asked the jury to consulei whether it was likely tte drum would be stood on concrete blocks, as it naci no holes in tlie bottom to give a draught. The • position on the blocks would make it unstable, while it it wore raised it would become cumbersome to place the body as j Crown suggested had been clone, i was utterly impossible for the Crown s reconstruction to be justified, it was on the assumption that the drum had been placed on blocks and the fire had fanned sheets from that that the Crown tests were made. Ihe Grown had completely misconceived the position. The iron had been heated some time during ordinary farm operations such as. heating branding irons. Counsel said he would then discuss the time within which Bayly was supposed to have done what the Crown alleged. Who was there to say how long it would take to consume a human body in such a furnace? Experiments were carried out on a false assumption and the Crown had staked all on a fallacy which could have been avoided had the ordinaiy precaution of simple measurements been taken. Until the Crown carried out the experiments no one knew liow long it would take to burn a human body. No murderer would .adopt such a grotesque course as to attempt to burn a corpse which might be found on his hands. (Proceedings.)
