INDIAN SUPERSTITION.
SLAUGHTER OF ANIAIALS. Received June 19. 12 noon. . CALCUTTA, June 18. Despite protests in the Press and from the public, another mass sacrifice of animals was carried out at Ellore. Thousands of animals were slaughtered in the streets in propitiation to the goddess of smallpox, who “refused to he appeased” when six thousand were thus sacrificed on Alay 29. The streets reeked with blood and the whole town presented a ghastly appearance, carcases being everywhere.
