DISPUTE OVER DUTIES.
CASE FOUGHT FOR YEARS. Even in death the late Prince Ranjitsinhji. Maharajah of Nawanagar, has won a fight. For years he had battled with the Government of India over the imposition of duty, involving over £1,000,000. The Daily Mail states that Lord Dunedin, who was appointed arbitrator in the dispute, has pronounced definitely in favour of the lat© Maharajah. Prince Ranjitsinhji had protested against the Indian Government imposing duty on goods shipped from his ports to British India. He had fought the case from 1927 until his death in 1933, spending many thousands of pounds. He held that an impartial decision could not be given by the Indian Government, and just before his death he learned that his efforts to have the case tried in England had been successful. Lord Dunedin finds that the Government’s action in demanding Customs dues was inconsistent with their undertaking, and, therefore, the Maharajah had just cnuse for complaint.
