NOTE OF OPTIMISM
MATTER OF PROPER THINKING. “I sometimes think New Zealand is suffering from an inferiority complex that she .will never get back from the depression,” said Mr Hugh Morrison (Wairarapa) in his presidential address to the Farmers’ Union conference iff Wanganui yesterday. “But lam satisfied now that that is the wrong way to think. When people tell me that we won’t get back I don’t believe them. lam satisfied that we are getting back to a comfortable standard of living. If once we get our tails down, we will never get them up again.
“I have been all over the world and I have compared New Zealand working men with others, and I am satisfied that the New Zealander is a better worker and has more initiative. Taken all round, he has no equal anywhere in the world. We will see this depression through, but we must not be a nation of big monopolies. We must see the small capitalist—the dairy farmer and the small business man —on his feet. The small capitalist is getting a hiding now, but we must get him out of it or we will have Socialism. The one way to cure Socialism is to get the small capitalist on his feet.” (Applause.)
