YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND

PRICES.

There was active trading in gilt-edged securities and, bank shares in tho Wellington market yesterday. Advanced prices were paid for Government loans, bringing the yield on the short-dated 4 per cents, closo to tho level of that on the 3£ per cents. The 4 per cent, stock, 1940, sold at £lO5 15s, yields £3 4s per cent., compared with £3 6s per cent, on the 3£ per cent, stock, 1939-52, at the same price. Sales of Wellington City 4£ per cents, and Wellington Harbour Board 5£ per cents, at substantial premiums were also reported. Little change was seen in bank shares. Five sales of New Zealand were made at 50s 6d and 50s 7d. The D long term mortgage shares advanced to 355, no sellers. Union Bank sold at £lO 0s 6d and £lO Is. Insurance shares were extremely firm. New Zealand had a sale late on Wednesday at 635, and more were wanted at that figure. Standard were also wanted at 635, but sellers asked 675. Other sections of the market were quiet but firm. Union Steam preference were still wanted at 265, but there wero no sellers.
