Li. KNAPP DEPARTS FOR AUCKLAND. ‘ (By “Binocular.") L. Knapp left for Auckland last night with Callamart, Hauwai, and Pango, while Tudor, who was a winner at the Te Kuiti meeting, went on from Te Rapa. All four candidates are in excellent order and they should give a good account of themselves at the Great Northern meeting. Callamart will endeavour to repeat his Great Northern Steeplechase victory of twelve months ago. The mentor also holds a reasonable prospect of capturing the big flat race with Pango, who will appreciate the light poundage he will bo required to carry in the Cornwall Handicap. Awapuni’s other candidate for Ellcrslie, Golden Chant, will not leave for the scene of action till . later. Although Knapp’s team were not sent against tho watch yesterday, they all fulfilled useful tasks. Golden Chant (Flowers), however, was speeded up over five furlongs and she ran the distance in 1.74 after running the first two in 26 l-ssocs. Although tho flags were in the centre of the course proper, the going was somewhat holding, and the time was not equalled by thoso who followed her later. It is rather surprising to find that none of the prominent local flat horsemen will be making the trip to Ellerslic, it being the intention of R. Reed, K. Voitre, and W. J. Broughton to be in attendance at the Otaki fixture. Reed has been engaged for Diaolgist, All Spirit, Aiguille, Good Hunting, Gladium, and Pladie; K. Yoitro will he on La Poupco and Balbus, while Broughton will ride Lady Ronald, Lalla Quex, Ebeum, Lady Nan, and Bonnie Vale. C. Thomson, however, will be associated with L. Knapp’s jumpers, while G. Duncan will have tho mount on Pango. Golden Chant will he ridden by B. H. Morris. Incidentally, R, Reed intends undertaking another trip across the Tasman and will leavo for Sydney about the 15th of next month. OTAKI CANDIDATES AT WORK YESTERDAY.

Lord Moutoa (Scobie), who ran an excellent second at Bulls in his first essay with the colours up, ran home from the three furlongs post in 41secs.

Boudoir (Rao) finished too strongly for Taura Lad (Faulkner) and Easterly (Thomas) at the end of a five furlongs task in 1.10 2-5. Boudoir is moulding into a nice typo of filly. Ebeum (Broughton), who had tho inside running, was travelling nicely alongside Good Hunting (Reed) at the end of five furlongs run in 1.9, tho first two furlongs having been left behind in 26 2-ssecs. Little has been seen of La Moderne (Rae) in a sprinting role for some time, but the chestnut mare was too good for Midacre (Thomas) at the close of a comfortable five furlongs in 1.135. The Colossus gelding Collodian (W. Broughton), who is developing into a big, bold youngster, was going equally as well as Tannin (R. C. Stratton) at the end of three furlongs in 43secs. Blacksmith (Reed), who has made a good recovery from his leg injury, left six furlongs behind in 1.23. The Arrowsmith gelding will not make the trip to the Auckland meeting, and his next appearance in public will be at Foxton. Bold Jim (Voitre) jumped away from the seven furlongs post in company with a big upstanding Royal Divorce gelding from the same stable, but three furlongs from home the latter dropped out and King Thomond (Wynd) joined in to carry Bold Jim home. King Tliomond, who looks very well after his epell, had the advantage at the close, running the last three furlongs in 43 3-sseo. Bold Jim ran the first half mile in 59sec. and the full distance in 1.42 3-5.

Flaxen (Rae) worked attractively in running five furlongs in 1.10, while Thrasher (Wynd), who followed, ran six furlongn in 1.244, the first three furlongs being left behind in 43sec. Among those accorded easy tasks were W. Pine’s new arrivals, Peter Jackson (who looks burly and well) and Raparahara, they being worked on the inner grass. A promising yearling filly by Gascony from Symbala was sprinted in company with two other yearlings when she gave evidence of possessing the family speed. Through, her grand-dam Symbolism she claims relationship with those brilliant sprinters of some years ago, Solfanello and Killashandra.
