SUSTENANCE RATES.

JOINT PROTEST WANTED. AUCKLAND, May 23. The Mount Eden Borough Council last evening decided merely to receive a letter from the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr A. E. Mansford) in which a statement of the latest sustenance rates was set out and a request made for a joint protest to the Prime Minister and tlie Unemployment Board. Quoting the Mayor of Palmerston North, Air W. J. G'atenby said the new rates provided sustenance of from os a week for single men to 20s for married men with five children. Air Gatenby pointed out by way of contrast that when the Unemployment Act was passed in 1930 it provided a rate of 2ls for single men, with an advance of 4s for each child for married men. A married man with no children was now given 10s a week in Palmerston North. In concluding his letter the southern Alayor said: “I feel sure that what has been introduced here will be brought into operation throughout the Dominion unless strong representations are made to the Government objecting to the system.” Rates prevailing in Auckland at the moment range from 10s a week for single men to 26s for married men with three or more children.
