PRINCE GEORGE’S LETTER, EXPLANATION TO DELEGATES. Received May 23, 11.50 a.m. LONDON, May 23. It is semi-officiall.v explained that Prince George’s letter to.the British Legion was sent to Sir Frederick Maurice 10 days ago, and it was presumed that the various authorities had been informed of the Prince s decision several days ago. The delay caused considerable misunderstanding, at which the Prince was distressed. Sir Frederick Maurice informed the British Legion conference that the litter announcing that Prince George could not attend the opening reached him on May 14, by which time the unfortunate Press controversy about the Legion administration was taking a new turn daily, accompanied by many wild statements. Therefore, alter taking tire best available advice, he had decided to keep the letter confidential until the conference opened in order to prevent involving Prince George’s name in any unpleasantness. The delegates cheered the explanation. The conference of the British Legion at Weston-super-Mare was thrown into consternation when the president. Sir Frederick Maurice, read a letter from H.R.H. Prince George, declining an invitation to attend, “owing unfortunate, ly to the prominence given to reports of apparent attempts to create dissension within the Legion’s ranks. ’
