MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
STEWARD SENT TO GAOL. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 23. Arthur Burton G'reagh, aged 54, a steward on the Jacob Ruppert, the Byrcl expedition ship, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for theft of an eiderdown quilt from the vessel. A similar charge against Lawrence Henry Kennedy, aged 40, a sailmaker on the Bear of Oakland, was dismissed. The police stated that there had been extensive thieving from the expedition vessels. ARREST IN BUSH. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 23. Cyril Bloekley Robertson was located bv Detective Doyle and Constable Mannix after ten days in bush country eighteen miles i« towards the West Coast from the Makaroa district. He appeared in the Police Court charged with failing fo account for £56, the property of Court Pride Alexandra. : Accused has been living on deer meat. * The police stated that the sum of about £9OO was involved. SERIOUS CHARGE. DETECTIVE’S GOOD WORK. Per Press Association. NELSON, May 23. One of the cases of safeblowing which caused alarm in Nelson in July last was cleared up in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, when Patrick Terence Burke, aged 39, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Howcroft’s grocery shop and stealing £lO Is 6d in money, and tobacco and cigarettes valued at 2s. Detective Sinclair said a suitcase found at Waterlea footbridge in Blenheim contained plasticine and explosives and was later forwarded to Nelson. He found the plasticine corresponded to that used on Howcroft’s safe. Chisel marks on the window corresponded with a chisel in the suitcase. Trousers in the case had the name Burke written on the pocket. Burke was sentenced to a. month s imprisonment for being in possession of explosives and committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence on the major charge. CHARGE AT WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 23. William Perry Hollings, described on the charge slieet as an ex-solicitor and a minor, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with stealing £660, the property of Samuel Wilson, by fraudulently applying to another purpose the proceeds of a cheque which were to have been invested on the security of a first mortgage. The offence was alleged to have been committed on or about July 7. Counsel said a plea of not guilty would be entered, and that on the instructions Ire had received accused had a complete answer to the charge. A remand on hail of £SOO was granted to next Wednesday, the police stating that the arrest had only been made this morning and there were a lot of inquiries to be made.
